Cycling History (Publishing) Ltd was formed in 2012 to take on the publishing aspects of the Cycling History and Educational Trust.
Its first publications were the International Cycle History Conference Proceedings covering the Conferences held from 2010 to 2014.
The Company is now focusing on making available material from the Trust's collection as well as archives or rare publications held by private individuals. This will enable them to be made accessible to readers and researchers.
You can find out the publications available and purchase then at https://chpublishing.org.uk/
Latest Updates
UnpublishedProgress is being made on digitisation of archive material and the first three of the silent road time trial videos filmed by the brothers Godfrey and Geoffrey Turner in 1965 to 1967 are now available to view online.
The online archive is being developed to present a range of digitised material held by the Cycling History and Educational Trust.
Digitisation is a long process and we are dependant on volunteers to undertake this work so it is a slow process. We have a number of excellent videos which were produced by the Turner brothers, of which the first few are now available and a few catalogues from the collection as well. Other materials such as other video collections, photographs other information will be added as time permits.
Modern Records Centre
UnpublishedThe physical archive is housed in the Modern Records Centre at the University of Warwick where it is stored under controlled conditions of humidity and temperature. It is catalogued by the archivists at the Centre and much of the Archive is listed on the Centre's website at https://warwick.ac.uk/services/library/mrc/explorefurther/digital/nca
The collection includes the records of many famous manufacturers, cycling clubs and individuals from the formative years of cycling history. There is a large collection of books and magazines.
Visitors are advised that it is not possible to "browse" the archive at Modern Records Centre. Arrangements should be made by contacting the Centre to request specific material so that it may be brought to the reading room before a visit.
Material from the archive is being digitised and the objective of this site is to make much of the material available here.
The Objectives of the Cycling History and Educational Trust
are defined in the Trust's Deed and are summarised below:
- To help young people through education and training to develop their physical and mental capacities and skills in the use of cycles.
- To provide facilities for recreation connected directly or indirectly with cycling.
- To promote education by the study of the countryside of places of scenic, historic or architectural interest.
- To promote road safety, particularly of cyclists.
- To promote the preservation of places of scenic, historical or architectural interest.

Donations and legacies are always welcomed by the Trust
If you are considering donating literature please get in touch with the secretary.
Donors of material should be aware that, even if their donation is a gift to the Trust, expenses are incurred by the Trust in handling their donation. The material has to be stored and catalogued and very often insured and, although the trustees all give their time freely, the professional archivists employed for cataloguing do not.
Donations of Material
Donations can take a number of forms;
- A completely free gift. Here the ownership of the material passes completely to the Trust. It will be added it to the Archive if a new item; used to upgrade the collection if it is a superior copy to that already held; sold for the benefit of the Trust if it duplicates an item already in the Archive.
- A conditional gift. To be returned to the donor if a copy is found to be already in the Archive.
- A loan. This generally applies to larger collections of items such as the records of a national body or major club. In all cases a Loan Agreement will be entered into with the donating organisation.
Monetary Donations
Financial support is particularly welcome, of course. Again it is essential to get in touch with the secretary since, if you are a taxpayer, your donation can be increased by 28% by making a Gift Aid declaration. This simply involves you in signing a form which the secretary will supply.
Leave a Legacy
If you have enjoyed cycling during your lifetime you may wish to help others to do the same. The Trust has benefited considerably from legacies; indeed, the Trust was founded as a result of a legacy from the late Frank Whitt whose vision it was to help others enjoy cycling.
Here are examples of the wording your solicitor could use in drafting your will:
If you would like to leave a specific sum of money:
"I give to The Cycle Touring and Countryside Trust, Registered Charity No. 272792, the sum of £..... to be applied for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Honorary Secretary or other proper officer shall be sufficient to discharge for the same."
If you would like to leave a residuary legacy:
"I give all the residue of my estate both real and personal to The Cycle Touring and Countryside Trust, Registered Charity No. 272792 absolutely to be applied for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Honorary Secretary or other proper officer shall be sufficient discharge for the same"
